Uranium Mine in Arlit, Niger

The Uranium mine in Arlit can be found at 900 km northeast of the capital Niamey (more than 1200 km by road) on the southern border of the Sahara desert and on the western range of the Aïr mountains.  It represents one of the largest uranium reserves in Niger having estimated reserves of 47.5 million tons.

French nuclear power generation as well as the French nuclear weapons program are dependent on the uranium that is extracted from the mine - more than 3400 tonnes per year.

But the uranium extraction contaminated the region's water supplies and the population faces now higher mortality rates (twice as much as the rest of the country) due to radiation.
