Uranium Mines in Arlit, Nigeria

900km northwest of the Nigerian capital of Niamey, the Arlit uranium mine borders the Sahara Desert and the Aïr Mountains in the northern part of Nigeria. It represents one of the largest uranium reserves in the country, with 47.5 million tons of the ore.

French nuclear power generation, as well as the French nuclear weapons program, depend on the uranium that is extracted from the Arlit mine - more than 3,400 tons a year.

But the extraction of the ore generated great contamination in the region, with a high concentration of uranium in the water that supplies the population and a high mortality rate due to radiation.
